When did they get smarter? When did they get wiser?
There seemed to be a barely perceptible moment (which in truth was more of an extremely gradual process), when my children, who I once perceived to be blank slates that I filled and shaped with knowledge and experience, are now my source of knowledge, skills and wisdom.
Some skill sets and intuitive abilities surpassed mine many years ago…like when my eldest son, then in second grade, understood and computed math way beyond my own adult abilities. My middle son was helping me with computers and technology since middle school and continues to be my tech support to this day. And there was that time early on when my then very young daughter, with her all-observing eyes, commented, “Mom, why do you say hi to and smile at everyone? You don’t know EVERYONE.” Those eyes still observe and perceive all.
These were surprising moments. But as they entered early adulthood, my children's omniscience took on new proportions. I realized that I was calling them for advice more often than they were calling me.
I don’t know when they got smarter and wiser than I, but it happened…and I stand in awe.
My first illustrated collection of poems is available for purchase.
